The Giechburg

History:
The Giechburg is a castle ruin near the town of Scheßlitz, situated in the administrative district of Bamberg.
Built in the 10th century and rebuilt in 1550 as a renaissance-style palace after a fire during a peasants' riot, it is among the most beautiful castles of the district.
The Giechburg was built by the counts of Schweinfurt and was bought by a post office clerk in the middle of the 20th century.
Since 1971 it has belonged to the rural administrative district of Bamberg.
The administration implemented various renovation measures and made the castle ruin a venue and a centre for cultural events.
Thus, various art exhibitions regularly take place in the dungeon of the Giechburg.
Positioned on a 520m high plateau, you get a great view of the surrounding villages and the beautiful landscape.
That is why the Giechburg is not just a great opportunity to see medieval architecture, but also a tourist attraction for the whole family.
The castle can be visited for free throughout the year.

Arrival:
We can particularly recommend hiking to the castle from the “Gügelkirche“, a church which is located on the hill opposite the castle.
The 20-minute walk does not only offer an educational trail about meadows and forest, but you can also admire sculptures by various artists.
Alternatively, you can also use the “Maintal-Leinleiter-Radweg“ to reach the castle by bike.
It's also possible to drive to the castle by car: a paved road leads to the bottom of the plateau or directly to the castle wall.

Restaurants:
After a tour of the castle we recommend a visit to one of the restaurants in the surrounding area, for example in Scheßlitz, or the „Giech“ inn  in the castle itself.
There is a beer garden in the historic ambiance of the castle and a guest house, too.

Pilgrimage church:
Close to the Giechburg, on a hill opposite the castle ruin, there is another highlight of the region:
The pilgrimage church “Gügel“.
It was built in 1270 in honour of Saint Pancras on a rock in the middle of a forest.
Its richly decorated interior with a high altar from the renaissance era, numerous artworks, a baroque organ and the pictorial location make it a perfect destination for a day trip.

Recommendation: A visit to the „Giecher Bäck“
During the day, „Rahmer's Backstube“ in Straßgiech near Scheßlitz is quite a normal bakery.
But at night, it becomes a meeting place for people from the region.
From 10:00 pm on, the baker Rahmer sells fresh pastry and, (according to his customers), the best meat loaf in the county.
The “Giecher Bäck”, as the locals call their bakery, is a place where you can meet new people in a casual and easy-going atmosphere.
The citizens of Straßgiech are very hospitable and happily welcome tourists.
