Breweries in Bad Staffelstein

“Water will be precious drops, once you put in malt and hops!”

The Franconians are well known for their beer paradise on the upper Main way beyond their own region. Many breweries offer a large variety, and the original taste of their suds enchant young and old alike. The inhabitants of Bad Staffelstein are proud of their regional brew. In the neighbourhood of the town, there are ten breweries, with high quality beers which impress both the locals and visitors from all over by their high standards. Beer is part of Bad Staffelstein just as mustard is part of the Franconian white sausage.

History:
The brewery handicraft of Bad Staffelstein is based on a long tradition. In 1856 this “liquid bread” was first produced in the town itself and has been refined ever since. The many breweries are part of the same family heritage. Thanks to old recipes which were passed down through many generations, the regional beers have got a unique flavour. The young brewers however are creative and open to innovations as long as it contributes to pleasing their clients. In 2005 the “Staffelberg-Bräu” in Loffeld, a picturesque village outside Bad Staffelstein, applied a new environmentally friendly method whereby they gently brew their suds.

Every summer a beer fate takes place in the Square outside the town hall. Visitors can acquire a so called “beer diploma”.

The way to the “beer diploma”

In 2011 the following breweries took part:
  • Brewery-Restaurant Hennemann (Am Dorfbrunnen 13, Stublang)
  • Brewery-Restaurant Hetzel “Zum Pfau” (Frauendorf 11a)
  • Brewery “Staffelberg-Bräu“ (Mühlteich 8, Loffeld)
  • Brewery-Restaurant Thomann (Altmainstr. 5, Wiesen)
  • Brewery-Restaurant “Trunk” (Vierzehnheiligen)
  • Brewery-Restaurant “Reblitz“ (Am Mahlberg 1, Nedensdorf)
  • Brewery Reichert “Metzgerbräu” (Stublanger Str. 2, Uetzing)
  • Hotel-Restaurant-Café “Adler-Bräu” (Restaurant “Schwarzer Adler”, End)
  • Brewery-Restaurant Dinkel (Frauendorfer Str. 18, Stublang)

Particularities:
The brewery-restaurant “Trunk” next to the abbey of Vierzehnheiligen provides a specialty: “First church, then beer.” You can visit the Basilica or hike over from the Staffelberg before you raise your glass in the tavern or take part in a guided tour through the brewery. In this location you can - unlike in the church – directly see where all the good things come from! A great offer – not only for beer connaisseurs.
Those for whom drinking beer is the real thing can take a trip to Bamberg where they have another possibility of acquiring the so-called “beer diploma”. By walking across the town and by stopping for a beer at different breweries they can obtain stamps in a card and will finally be allowed to carry the proud title of  being a “Certified Beer Drinker”.

Tip:
There is the  saying “Always room for a beer in between an honest man’s liver and his green spleen.”
But given the wide assortment of beers you can choose from in and around Bad Staffelstein, these two organs must indeed be far apart from each other. You are spoilt for choice between potent, full-flavoured bock (in May, for example), light and dark beer from craft breweries and tangy wheat beer. An incredible range of brands!
People who would like to taste all these treats without becoming too tipsy will appreciate something that is typical of Upper Franconia: the so-called “Schnitt”. A “Schnitt” is half a glass of beer for half the price, but it is often more. A real bargain!
