Bamberg - The Franconian Rome

Bamberg is embedded in the beautiful region of Franconia and is approximately 30 km away from Bad Staffelstein. The World Heritage City offers a variety of activities and attractions for its visitors. The title “Franconian Rome” was given to Bamberg because you can find a church on nearly each of its seven hills.

Of all the city’s churches the Cathedral of Bamberg is particularly impressive. With its four spires it is regarded as the heart of the city; not only because of its fascinating architecture but also because of the valuable works of art inside: the world-famous “Bamberger Reiter” (the “horseman of Bamberg”), a pope’s and an emperor’s grave and the altar built by Veit Stoß. The square of the Cathedral was the centre of the historic Bamberg, due to the fact that the “Babenburg” has been located there, which was the origin of the city. The “Hofhaltung” (an old court next to the Cathedral) and the “Neue Residenz” (New Residence) with its beautiful rosarium are also located around the square of the cathedral.

Inside the church of the monastery on the “Michelsberg”, which was founded in 1015 by the first bishop of Bamberg, you can see the crypt of the canonized bishop Otto. The garden consists of beautiful terrace gardens, an orangery and vineyards

The old town of Bamberg has a particular charm to it which puts a spell on its numerous visitors.
An important emblem of the city is the old town hall which was built upon the river “Regnitz”. Legend has it that the bishop residing at that time didn’t want to permit his citizens to build a town hall, so that they started to knock posts into the Regnitz. In this way they created an artificial island and established the town hall which was regarded as a border between the episcopal and the civil areas of the old town.

From the town hall you get a great view of  “Little – Venice”. This row of houses on the bank of the river can be admired during the “Fischerstechen” (water jousting) which takes place every year during the “Sandkerwa”, the biggest public festival in Bamberg.

Every year in the last week of august, the “Sandkerwa” is celebrated in the Sandstraße in the old town. Beer gardens, inns and restaurants welcome you with local dishes and drinks.

Sightseeing tours with a special topic (such as Bamberg in medieval times) are also offered by the tourist information centre.

Bamberg’s nine breweries produce Franconia’s most popular and most famous drink: beer. Every visitor should taste it in one of the numerous beer gardens in the city- they are definitely worth a visit!

In Bamberg’s town centre residents and tourists can appreciate and enjoy the many possibilities of strolling and shopping. Many nice cafés invite you to stay. You can sit outside and relax while watching the crowd and the numerous buskers.

You will surely enjoy and never forget a visit to Bamberg!

Whenever the sun shines you can have a picnic in the beautiful corners of the “Hain” – area. Whenever you want to stop for a bite to eat, you can enjoy the idyllic ambience of the old canal in the restaurant “Bootshaus”.
